Palestinian Women of Syria Speaking Back

Oral Herstory in Stateless Diaspora

Mette Edith Lundsfryd Stendevad

History / Middle East / General

An in-depth exploration of the oral herstories of four generations of Palestinian women from Syria. Displaced internally and externally by the former Syrian regime's onslaught, following the peaceful uprisings that began in 2011, the women speaking in this book now live in Denmark and Germany and as internally displaced in Syria. They recount powerful stories of statelessness, forced migration, and survival.

Through an innovative methodology, the book foregrounds the gendered and intersectional dimensions of statelessness. Using artefacts such as participant-drawn maps, personal diaries, and photographs, the research transforms memory into a collaborative analytical tool, connecting knowledge to broader socio-political structures.
Blending feminist and decolonial epistemologies, the author reports history through women's voices, tracing how the legacies of settler colonialism reverberate across generations. Co-creative storytelling and “speaking back” sessions invite participants to critically engage with their own narratives, offering new ways to understand identity, memory, and resistance across time.

Deeply reflective and accessible, this book brings to light the marginalised histories of stateless Palestinian women in Syria, challenging dominant frameworks of knowledge production. Its unique combination of gendered analysis, decolonial theory, and collaborative methodology makes it a vital contribution to the study of displacement, oral history, and feminist research.
