Translation from French into English
A Journey through Literary Prose Texts from the Early Modern until the Present Day
Christophe Gagne | Emilia Wilton-Godberfforde
Translation from French into English helps advanced students of French develop an awareness of the stylistic differences between French and English, as well as an in-depth insight into the complexities of the translation process.
This comprehensive volume features sixteen chapters spanning early modern philosophy to contemporary Francophone novels. Through an interactive structure of parallel French-English extracts and detailed commentaries, readers explore translation as an active process of negotiation and close reading. By navigating translation dilemmas—such as untranslatability, cultural nuances, and adaptation—this book bridges the gap between language acquisition and literary analysis. Ultimately, it benefits its readers by sharpening their critical interpretation skills, deepening their appreciation for diverse literary styles and periods, and equipping them with the practical and analytical judgement necessary to tackle complex textual challenges.
Translation from French into English will be a useful resource for students taking courses in advanced French language, French-English translation, and French literature. It will also be of interest to practicing French-English translators.
