Hadrian’s Wall and the Primary Classroom
Case Studies from a World Heritage Site
Morgan Fail | Stephanie Holton
Written by practitioners working across the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, this volume brings together a variety of innovative approaches to exploring Roman Britain’s most famous monument with primary age children.
Each chapter presents a detailed case study of a learning session that has been successfully delivered as part of the annual Hadrian’s Wall virtual learning event, highlighting approach and resources, as well as any cross-curricular opportunities that arise. While covering key skills in historical enquiry, such as how to reconstruct daily life from artefacts, decode ancient messages written in stone, and even restore the colours of the wall through scientific analysis, these case studies also highlight how the Wall can also be used as a springboard for children to engage in important discussions on diversity, climate change, movement of people, and the natural world around us.
This volume is part of an ongoing collaboration by a team of experts who bring history to life for primary children across the United Kingdom, on site and online, and offers primary educators innovative ideas and adaptable resources for bringing the people and places of Hadrian’s Wall into their own classrooms, museums, or home learning spaces.
