This volume asks what it would mean to reframe sustainability as a properly architectural question, one that compels the discipline to redefine its relation to form, materiality, technique, context, representation and political responsibility.

Bringing together eighteen contributions across five sections, the book advances a coherent argument: that thinking architectural sustainability requires moving towards a political theory of context. Each section counters one of the reductions that impoverish current discourse, the technocratic, the idealistic, the universalistic, the functional and the moralistic, and reconstructs the historical, material, situated, representational and political conditions under which an architectural theory of sustainability becomes possible. Rather than proposing a doctrine, the volume produces the critical framework within which such a theory can be developed, tested through historical paradigms, material conditions, situated contexts, representational media and political visions.

The book is addressed to scholars and advanced students of architectural theory, history and criticism, as well as to practitioners and researchers engaged with the intersections of sustainability, contemporary design culture and critical thought.

Richard Brook, PhD, is Professor in Architecture and Director of Research at Lancaster University. He was previously Professor of Architecture and Urbanism and Research Lead at Manchester School of Architecture. He is an architectural historian researching the post-war period (1945-1980), focussing on British architecture, landscape and urbanism. He is interested in the impact of regulations policies, and legislation on the design of space, and how these narrate wider social, cultural, economic, environmental and political histories.

Andrea Canclini is currently a Visiting Associate Professor of Architecture at the Lebanese American University; he previously taught at the Politecnico di Milano and Lancaster University. He holds degrees in architecture and philosophy, as well as a PhD in architecture. He has published widely in international journals and books; his research, supported by several institutions, explores the theoretical and cultural foundations of modern and contemporary architecture, its relational value as a site of hybridisation and exchange, and the theoretical links between architecture and sustainability.

Christian Gänshirt, PhD, is Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the German International University in Berlin, and Visiting Professor of Architecture Theory at the German University in Cairo. As a Visiting Researcher at the Politecnico di Milano he initiated a research network on sustainability. He previously taught at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, The University of Hong Kong, Kassel University, the Berlin University of the Arts, Leibnitz University Hanover, and the Brandenburg University of Technology. He works on architectural design theory, and the intersections between mainstream architecture theory and the discourses on sustainability.

Francesca Zanotto, Architect, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Architectural and Urban Design at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, Politecnico di Milano. She served as researcher at Università Iuav di Venezia, and as guest lecturer at Xi’an Jiaotong University and the Estonian Academy of Arts. Her work investigates the ecological implications of architectural design, focusing in particular on the study of circular design processes and forms of production of the built environment that conserve and increase urban biodiversity.

Publication Date:

23 March 2027

Publisher:

Taylor & Francis

Imprint:

Routledge

ISBN-13:

9781041217046

Format:

Hardback

Page Count:

270
