Hospital Information System (HIS) Project Success
A Practical Guide in the Digital Era
Shahram Gharib
Hospital Information System (HIS) Project Success addresses one of the most persistent challenges in healthcare centers: why Hospital Information System (HIS) projects continue to struggle despite massive investments, growing regulatory demands, and rapid digital transformation.
Drawing on nearly two decades of hands-on HIS implementation and operational experience, the author offers a clear, actionable framework for hospital managers, CIOs, IT managers, and project teams to achieve HIS project success. The core of the book is the Core Interaction Model (CIM), a performance-driven cycle that integrates observation, implementation, and qualification to support both project delivery and long-term system excellence. By adapting well-known project management methodologies and Agile to the unique realities of healthcare environments, CIM bridges the gap between strategy, governance, and daily operations. What makes this book beneficial is its practical, experience-based approach that connects digital health strategy with real-world HIS project challenges.
The book synthesizes best practices with lived experience, offering tools, examples, and insights that reflect the complexities of actual hospital environments rather than idealized scenarios.
Shahram Gharib is a Digital Health strategist and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) senior consultant with more than two decades of hands-on experience leading transformation programs across the Middle East. His work spans the full digital transformation lifecycle, from strategy and roadmap development to HIS implementation, interoperability, data and digital governance, and post-go-live operational excellence. Shahram is dedicated to advancing digital maturity, guided by global frameworks such as EMRAM and AMAM, while adapting these standards to regional realities and organizational culture.
He is the creator of the Core Interaction Model (CIM), a continuous performance and alignment framework designed to help hospitals achieve HIS implementation and operation success by integrating observation, implementation, and qualification into an iterative, learning-oriented cycle. CIM reflects his core belief that technology must serve people, empower teams, and improve the lived experience of clinicians, patients, and administrators.
As an active member of the HIMSS Middle East Committee, Shahram contributes to knowledge exchange and capability development across health systems, ministries, and academic networks. His consultancy focus includes Digital Health Strategy, Data and Digital Governance, EMR Adoption, Digital Transformation Excellence, and Digital Health Workforce Capability Building, supporting organizations striving toward smarter care environments.
Beyond his professional life, Shahram enjoys writing, practicing Qigong, and spending time with family. His mission is simple yet ambitious: To help hospitals not only go digital but also go cognizant with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
