Women Architects in Latin America

History, Practices, and Emerging Perspectives

Isabella Trindade | Ana Luisa Rolim

Architecture / Criticism

Women Architects in Latin America: History, Practices, and Emerging Perspectives examines the contributions of women architects across Latin America from the early twentieth century to the present. While a small number of figures have gained international recognition, many women who have shaped the region's architectural culture remain underrepresented in historical narratives.

Bringing together historical research, archival investigations, interviews, and contemporary case studies, this volume moves beyond the recovery of individual figures to examine how women have transformed architectural knowledge and practice. Across Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, and Peru, the chapters explore pioneering trajectories, historiography and visibility, territory and geographic centralism, collective and community-based practices, constructive cultures, care and motherhood, and emerging forms of architectural agency. Rather than simply adding women to an established architectural canon, the book asks how their experiences and practices might reframe the history of architecture in Latin America itself. By foregrounding forms of practice that engage collaboration, local knowledge, social equity, environmental responsibility, and territorial care, it challenges conventional models of authorship and architectural expertise.

The volume offers a more diverse and critical understanding of Latin American architecture and will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of architectural history, Latin American studies, gender studies, and contemporary architectural practice, while offering new perspectives on architecture in Latin America.

Isabella Trindade is a PhD architect, researcher, and educator whose work focuses on architectural history, theory, and criticism, with an emphasis on mid-century modern architecture and interiors in the post–World War II period. Her interdisciplinary research examines European cultural influences on architecture and interiors in Latin America. She has published in academic and professional journals and presented her research at national and international conferences. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Design at Queens University of Charlotte and previously taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where she was a full-time faculty member.

Ana Luisa Rolim is a PhD architect and educator whose work bridges academic research and professional design practice. Her research examines human responses to spatial environments, focusing on cognitive-sensory experiences in cultural and domestic settings. Building on the relationship between people and space, her current work investigates domestic environments designed by women architects and designers for their own habitation, exploring how these spaces both reflect and shape social structures, gender roles, and spatial perception. She has authored peer-reviewed publications and conference papers and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Interior Design Program at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
