Even today, the international political landscape remains shaped by the policy orientations of repressive political orders, lending renewed relevance to George Orwell's Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).

Orwell and the Dictator Novel offers a new reading of these works as foundational to an Anglophone tradition of "dictator fiction," spanning genres such as dystopian and science fiction, postmodern fiction, fantasy, fable, and realist postcolonial writing. While Latin American dictator novels have long been recognized as a distinct subgenre, their Anglophone counterparts have received less critical attention despite their significance in exploring dictatorship and totalitarianism. The study argues that Orwell, alongside contemporaries like Sinclair Lewis and Arthur Koestler, developed a "formal grammar" for the genre: a set of themes, tropes, and narrative structures that later writers adapt across diverse contexts. Rather than simply tracing Orwell's influence, the book demonstrates a reciprocal relationship, as later works both inherit and transform Orwell's formal and thematic concerns, reconfiguring them across cultural-historical settings, while also deepening our understanding of Orwell's works.

The tradition encompasses a remarkably diverse range of authors and genres. Central to the book's analysis is how literature functions as resistance against dictatorship. It focuses particularly on works like Naipaul's A Bend in the River, Atwood's The Testaments, Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and others that explore this theme. By situating these texts within a broader literary tradition, the book reveals how Anglophone fiction has consistently grappled with authoritarianism across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, remaining urgently relevant in today's political landscape.

Yutaka Okuhata is Associate Professor in the Department of English at Japan Women’s University, Tokyo.
