Despite their 'lowbrow' pedigree as products of a maligned genre in an equally maligned medium, 80's anthology horror series drew equally upon the literary horror tale's studies of psychological obsession and the vicious morality tales of 'Pulp' subgenres to reveal an American landscape of excessive greed, alienation, and antipathy. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFocusing on key programs of the era such as \u003ci\u003eCliffhangers\u003c\/i\u003e (1979), \u003ci\u003eDarkroom \u003c\/i\u003e(1981-82),\u003ci\u003e Tales from the Darkside\u003c\/i\u003e (1983-88), \u003ci\u003eThe Ray Bradbury Theatre\u003c\/i\u003e (1985-92), \u003ci\u003eFriday the 13th: The Series\u003c\/i\u003e (1987-90), and the reboots of \u003ci\u003eThe Twilight Zone\u003c\/i\u003e (1985-87) and \u003ci\u003eAlfred Hitchcock Presents\u003c\/i\u003e (1985-89), Kristopher Woofter and Erin Giannini highlight the persistent subversive themes and production realities of American televisual horror during a period of extreme American exceptionalism, conservatism, xenophobia, and isolationism that parallels the current American political landscape. In doing so, they assert that the undervalued and under-studied Pulp tradition on TV subverted America's sacrosanct vision of itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eErin Giannini\u003c\/b\u003e is an independent scholar.
