Looking at the cultural interactions and complex dynamics between the Roman military and local communities, this volume covers a range of case studies from less-studied and more diverse frontier zones such as North Africa, the Danubian provinces, Arabia and the Pontic region.

The chapters emphasize the diversity of frontier experiences across different provinces and challenge the traditional view of the frontiers as rigid, militarized borders. By integrating archaeological evidence with historical analysis and new digital methods (i.e. linear regression), this book provides a nuanced understanding of the entangled relationships and cultural exchanges that shaped life on the margins of the Roman world.

More specifically, there are presentations on newly uncovered and previously unpublished archaeological evidence from several significant sites: Da'janiya in Jordan on the Limes Arabicus, Cetace-Radujevac in Serbia on the Upper Moesian frontiers, Volubilis in Morocco on the Limes Africanus and Artaxata (the ancient capital of Armenia). And a variety of topics are covered such as the technological aspects of fortifications; the trade of luxury goods; consumption and dietary patterns; the distribution and cultural significance of wine; and the processes of religious hybridisation and change. The aim of this volume is to emphasize the practical aspects of military life and to explore the cultural interactions between the soldiers and local populations.
