When we think of care, we tend to think of something that derives from goodness, an act of generosity. And this is the case for many caring relationships. But when does care, on the contrary, produce and reproduce injustices? Focusing on social work, this book explores how caring for others can unintentionally cause harm to the care recipient, caregiver, and others, through power struggles, discrimination, or people's voices not being heard.

Beginning with theory in Parts I and II, Pierosara first outlines the most recent developments in care ethics and scrutinizes key overlooked issues. These range from care still being seen as a woman's responsibility to the fact that, in some cases, forms of care directly maintain the social and economic structures that produce marginalisation. She then interrogates epistemic injustices, outlining different theories of justice with a view to defining what epistemic injustices, or injustices related to knowledge, really are and investigating their consequences.

In the final part, Epistemic Injustices and the Ethics of Care deftly combines theory with practice. Through international case studies spanning social work in the UK, Europe, Canada, and South America, this urgent volume sheds light on real-world examples of good and bad practice within care contexts.
