Food and fashion are increasingly intertwined, as more and more fashion is printed with, shaped like or even made of food, while designer-approved kitchenware, food and cafés put the connection on the table.
Seasoned and Styled adopts a novel approach to this intersection by conceptualizing the connection as food meeting fashion, or food×fashion –becoming a fresh lens through which to analyze the complex, and often tense, interplay between individual agency and social frameworks.
Focusing on the 21st century, Lara Rössig provides an original contribution to debates on the status quo of taste, aesthetics, consumer behavior, socio-cultural communication and environmental awareness in a market-driven society – a society where the pursuit of personal pleasure and status collides with growing social and environmental concerns.
Drawing on interdisciplinary frameworks from cultural studies, sociology, philosophy, and economic theory, the study explores how food×fashion both reinforces and subverts established social hierarchies of race, class, and gender. In doing so, it positions food×fashion as a crucial mechanism for identity construction, social inclusion, and exclusion, and cultural meaning-making. At the same time, Seasoned and Styled foregrounds the ecological and economic stakes of this relationship, offering fresh insights into the politics of consumption, sustainability and social justice.
