Anti-Zionism is Not a Luxury

Zahi Zalloua

Philosophy / General

A call for the end of a Zionist world, this book embraces an affirmative anti-Zionism as a collective response to global injustice.

The war in Gaza has exposed the morally bankrupt hypocrisy at the heart of the West, which actively abets genocide, engages in colonial expropriation, and represses the resistance of the oppressed all while preaching equality and non-violence. The Zionist narrative is faltering. More and more people are resisting its authority, appearing more hospitable to the Palestinian message. But what does it really mean to be winning the symbolic struggle, when a “ceasefire” came two years too late at the hands of a deeply cynical West, leaving Gaza and Palestine open to new forms of domination-neo-colonial governance, economic strangulation, and the continued erasure of being and sovereignty?

Anti-Zionism Is Not a Luxury exposes the evasion at the heart of liberal interlocutors' claims to be interested in Palestinian liberation. They may care about the Palestinian people, as decent people do, and even criticize the belligerent settler movement in Israel, but they are typically unwilling to embrace anti-Zionism. They (mis)understand Palestinian liberation to be tied to the affective and political labor of fixing an “empathy deficit.” In fierce opposition to this complacency, Zahi Zalloua argues instead that Palestinian liberation requires an anti-colonial critique of Zionism and the settler state. For true revolution-a revolution that changes the social coordinates of the Israeli settler-colonial system-anti-Zionism is not a luxury.
