Completely revised coverage of nuclear materials from crystal structure to reactor applications
Now in its Second Edition, An Introduction to Nuclear Materials is completely revised and expanded with new chapters on phase diagrams of nuclear materials and accident tolerant fuels. Written by K. Linga Murty and Indrajit Charit, two leading nuclear engineering professors, this classroom-tested textbook systematically builds from fundamental crystal structures through dislocation theory to radiation damage and radiation effects in reactor components.
An Introduction to Nuclear Materials covers reactor system designs, materials applications across fuel rod assemblies, steam generators, and piping. Structure-property correlations are established throughout. Materials selection and life prediction methodologies address creep, corrosion, and other degradation mechanisms. Advanced topics include materials for space nuclear reactors and fusion reactors. An appendix compiles materials property data for reactor applications.

An Introduction to Nuclear Materials serves graduate and undergraduate students in nuclear engineering, nuclear physicists, and engineers in power technology who require a materials science perspective on reactor design. Its classroom-tested approach and structure-property emphasis make it a reliable reference for both academic study and professional practice in the nuclear industry.
K. Linga Murty, PhD, is Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University, USA. His research focuses on deformation, creep, fatigue, and fracture behaviors of nuclear core and pressure boundary materials, with particular emphasis on structure-property relationships and effects of radiation exposure.
Indrajit Charit, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Industrial Management at the University of Idaho, USA. His research focuses on developing processing-structure-properties relationships in nuclear reactor materials.
