This volume addresses some of the most important and hotly-pursued topics in the field of plant membrane transport.

The first two chapters consider membrane transport analysis, emphasizing concepts, techniques and tools for electrophysiology. Chapters 3-8 divide along boundaries of pumps, coupled transporters and channels; the addition of a chapter on water channels highlights this rapidly expanding and, until recently, highly controversial topic. Chapters 9 and 10 deal with issues of Ca2+ and H+ signalling, and of membrane traffic that increasingly attracts the attention of researchers in plant development. Finally, chapters 11 and 12 take a post-genomic look at the problems of understanding the integration of transport mechanisms and its relevance to inorganic nutrition and phytoremediation.
