Flow Measurement

David W. Spitzer

Technology & Engineering / Systems Engineering

Flow Measurement is a reader-friendly guide that explains how and why fluids are measured in industry. Written for engineers, technicians and students, this book blends real-world experience with clear explanations of fundamentals, including fluid properties, continuity, Bernoulli's principles and the basics of measurement quality. It surveys a wide range of meter technologies, from magnetic, turbine and ultrasonic meters to Coriolis, positive displacement, vortex, thermal and open-channel methods, describing how each works, where it fits best and common installation and maintenance concerns. This book also covers applied topics important to industry, including calibration and uncertainty, linearization and totalization, custody transfer (billing) issues, sanitary and standards considerations, and how to choose the right meter for a given process.

Packed with practical advice, case examples, and standards guidance, this book helps readers align meter selection and installation with real process needs, while emphasizing the importance of accurate and reliable measurements.

David W. Spitzer, author of ISA's Industrial Flow Measurement, Variable Speed Drives: Principles and Applications, and Advanced Regulatory Control: Application Techniques, is a consultant practicing instrumentation, flow, measurement, and process control engineering. He was previously with USX, Bayer and was the Manager of Utility and Instrument Engineering at Nepera, Inc., where he was responsible for the technical support and overall direction in the electrical, instrument, and utility areas on a plant-wide basis, as well as assisting in the preparation and execution of projects, systems, and long-range planning. With degrees in engineering from the University of Connecticut and the University of Illinois, Mr. Spitzer teaches courses in flow measurement, pressure measurement, level measurement, and variable speed drive technology. His numerous papers on flowmeter technology have appeared in conference proceedings and technical journals.
Mr. Spitzer serves on the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Committee on Measurement of Fluid Flow in Closed Conduits. He is a senior member of ISA—The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society, and serves on the INTECH editorial advisory board and the editorial advisory board of Flow Control magazine. His other interests include the design and implementation of energy saving projects, distributed control systems and programmable controllers, and control valves and other final control elements. His company, Copperhill and Pointer, Inc., produces competitive intelligence reports on flowmeters for users and manufacturers, and provides sophisticated engineering and product development services in instrumentation.
