In reality, it represents a far broader transformation of the automobile industry and the ancillary economic sectors that support it. Electrification requires large inputs of critical minerals, enhanced digital technologies, and new plants for manufacturing batteries and electric powertrains. To meet higher projected electricity demand, generation, transmission, and storage capacities must also be increased. The revolution is reshaping supply chains, industrial organization, employment, and geopolitical relationships. Households face new challenges for vehicle ownership, driving range, and access to charging infrastructure. Vehicle manufacturers, workers, and automotive-industry dependent regions face potential economic losses reminiscent of those experienced earlier by coal and other declining industries. Governments must seek alternatives to taxes on fossil fuels to fund national, regional, and local budgets while simultaneously facing potential opposition to higher taxes and charges and demands for economic assistance by adversely affected socioeconomic groups and regions.

The book is addressed both to a professional audience—students, researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals—as well as readers wishing to understand the many dimensions of the transition.

André de Palma has a Ph.D. in physics (supervised by Nobel Laureate I. Prigogine) from the Free University of Brussels and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Burgundy. He has taught at Queen’s University (Canada), Northwestern University (USA), University of Geneva (Switzerland), and ENS Paris Saclay (France). He was also employed by the Bank of France. He is now Emeritus Professor at CY Cergy-Paris University and is Visiting Researcher in Strasbourg and Laval universities.

He works in transportation economics, industrial organization, decision-making, and risk and has published more than 320 articles and 9 books. In 2023, he created an academic consortium to study climate change (AICC-Action versus Inaction facing Climate Change) with 10 universities in Europe, Canada, and the USA. He was Founding Member of International Transport Economic Association (ITEA).

Yannik Riou is Graduate Engineer from École Centrale de Paris and holds a Ph.D. in economics from Université de Cergy-Pontoise (now CY Cergy-Paris University). He has held senior and general management positions in both the energy and automotive sectors, notably at Electricité De France and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. In addition to product and process management in Europe and South America, he launched local manufacturing of powertrains in Russia, India, China, and the Middle East on behalf of all Alliance brands and their customers.

Drawing on his dual background in product-process engineering and industry, as well as his knowledge of the global automotive market and Economics, he brings a systemic and operational perspective to the transformations affecting the transportation and automotive sectors. His expertise spans technological change, industrial organization, and the interaction between energy and mobility systems, with a particular emphasis on the deployment and adoption of electric vehicles.

Robin Lindsey has a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University. He taught at the University of Alberta (Canada) and is now Emeritus Professor at UBC. Over his career, he has conducted research on traffic congestion, road pricing, urban public transportation, advanced traveler information systems, financing transportation infrastructure, and the environmental costs of road transportation. He has published over 100 journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings in transportation, economics, and regional science. He is Coauthor with Kenneth Small and Erik Verhoef of the third edition of The Economics of Urban Transportation (2024, Routledge).
