It is a trailblazing piece of work which over 30 years after its release remains immensely enjoyable and relevant. Brash, smart, and intensely practical, Chantel is a high-school junior in a hurry to prove she is more than the labels her race, gender, and class put on her. Isra Al Kassi and Angela Moneke explore how Harris's film handles the complexities of teenage life and, in a society in which young Black women are rarely the protagonists in their own stories, allows Chantel to take control of her own narrative. They explore the film's contexts in New York City and 90s fashion, teen and unplanned pregnancies on screen, and consider how Harris challenges stereotypes of Black girls in cinema. They go on to consider Just Another Girl's legacy of the film, and its continuing impact.

Isra Al Kassi has a background in events and venue management with a focus on audience development and building partnerships.
