Classic Commentaries
Satires
Persius | J. Connington | J. Connington
Fiction / Classics
This edition was based on lectures delivered by John Conington during his tenure of the Chair of Latin at Oxford in the middle of the nineteenth century. After his death, they were edited by H. Nettleship. The introduction (a verbatim lecture) and the translation retain the wit and freshness of original delivery. The book was long accepted as the definitive work on Persius, much work has since been done on the satirist and new editions and translations have appeared. The Conington/Nettleship edition has never appeared in paperback before, and has long been out of print. This reissue, which includes the Latin text, facing translation and commentary, allows students of ancient satire to use a truly classic edition.
J. Conington was Chair of Latin at the University of Oxford, UK, in the middle years of the nineteenth century.
