Environmental Toxicology of Hazardous Material Waste in Public Health Emergencies

"Selected Papers of 2025 11th International Conference on Energy Materials and Environmental Engineering (ICEMEE 2025)"

Xiaosheng Qin | George N. Zaimes | Hongquan Song

Political Science / Public Policy / Environmental Policy

This proceeding focuses on the intersection of toxicology, waste management, and public health. Structured into three thematic sections, it addresses critical challenges posed by hazardous materials during crises. It delves into environmental toxicological mechanisms, exploring how pollutants such as medical waste, PFAS, and antibiotic waste migrate through ecosystems, undergo chemical transformations, and trigger synergistic toxicity. It emphasizes predictive modeling for emerging contaminants like nanomaterials and viral vectors. It evaluates pollution control technologies, comparing risks of incineration, chemical disinfection, and biodegradable alternatives (e.g., bio-based PPE). Advanced solutions like AI-driven monitoring systems and microbial remediation for contaminated sites are highlighted. Combining scientific rigor with policy analysis, this book advocates for integrated approaches to mitigate ecological and public health risks in future emergencies.

Dr. Xiaosheng Qin is currently an Associate Professor with School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Hunan University, China, and PhD degree from University of Regina, Canada. Dr. Qin mainly teaches Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His research interests cover the topics of water resource systems modelling and urban environmental resources management. Dr. Qin is currently the Associate Editors for Journal of Environmental Informatics and Water Science and Technology, and serves (or served) as board members, and guest editors for 7 international journals. Dr. Qin was invited as reviewers for over 50 journals and has over 150 scientific publications
