He is the President of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare and a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice in Social Work. He was also appointed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Community Preventive Services Task Force. In 2023, he was appointed to the New York City Board of Health. Before being named NYU Silver’s Dean, he was the Constance and Martin Silver Professor of Poverty Studies and Executive Director of the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research. His current research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, and he has been ranked among the top 2% of most-cited scientists by Elsevier.
