This didactic book offers a comprehensive and up to date overview of the principal vitreoretinal disorders and their diagnostic and therapeutic management, encompassing both clinical and surgical approaches. Developed by the Brazilian Retina and Vitreous Society (BRAVS) and authored by leading specialists, it spans the full breadth of retinology, including Basic Science and Propaedeutics, Retinal Vascular Diseases, Medical Retina (degenerative, autoimmune, toxic, inflammatory, and infectious conditions), Surgical Retina (laser treatments and vitreoretinal procedures), as well as Choroidal and Retinal Tumors. Throughout, the emphasis remains on epidemiology, multimodal diagnostic strategies, evidence based clinical and surgical care, and emerging gene therapies.
Readers will benefit from a modern and integrated diagnostic framework grounded in the latest scientific evidence.
In addition, this title includes surgical videos and over 350 high quality figures, offering an expansive visual and practical perspective that is essential for effective clinical practice in the field.
Diseases of the Retina and Vitreous – Clinical & Surgical Practice and Innovations will serve as an indispensable reference for ophthalmology residents, retina fellows, and experienced retina specialists alike.
I graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU) in 1986 and completed my medical specialization in Ophthalmology between 1987 and 1990. I later pursued advanced academic training, earning both a master’s degree (1996) and a Doctorate (2015) in Ophthalmology from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). Early in my career, I undertook specialized training in Retina and Vitreous, completing an internship at UNIFESP from 1990 to 1991 and subsequently at the Doheny Eye Institute of the University of Southern California from 1991 to 1992. These experiences helped shape my professional focus on retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery. In 2018, I also completed an MBA at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV). I currently serve as a Full Professor at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), where I am also Head of the Ophthalmology Service and the Retina and Vitreous Unit. Throughout my career, I have developed extensive experience in the field of Medicine, particularly in ophthalmic surgery, with an emphasis on diseases and the surgical treatment of the retina and vitreous.
My academic contributions include scientific articles published in specialized journals and the authorship of book chapters. I also organized and serve as editor-in-chief of the Retina e-book of the Brazilian Retina and Vitreous Society (BRAVS), contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and continuing education in the specialty. This work also served as the foundation for the book Diseases of the Retina and Vitreous: Clinical & Surgical Practice and Innovations. I have been actively involved in the scientific community, serving as a speaker at major congresses in Brazil and at international meetings in the United States, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. I have also participated in the organization of 23 ophthalmology events and had the honor of presiding over two major congresses. From April 2018 to April 2020, I served as President of the Brazilian Retina and Vitreous Society (BRAVS).
