This volume presents a multidisciplinary overview of microplastic pollution, exploring its sources, environmental distribution, detection methods, and ecological and human health impacts. It highlights current research on the degradation of plastics, the role of wastewater treatment plants, the emergence of nanoplastics, and the transport of pollutants via microplastic particles. The book also addresses innovative solutions, including green polymer synthesis, recycling strategies, and mitigation technologies.
Special attention is given to the Mediterranean Sea and coastal regions, offering insights into ongoing projects and policy-relevant findings. This work is intended for scientists, industry professionals, and decision-makers in governmental and non-governmental organizations seeking a comprehensive understanding of the issue and actionable strategies for intervention.
All Co-Editors are experienced researchers at the Institute for Polymers Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). All of them have large experience in polymer science and technology. In particular, their main research interests can be summarized as follows: - Design and study of polymer based systems and composites with tailored functional properties; - Analysis of microplastic pollution phenomena and design and production of mitigation systems - Analysis of the release of microfibers from textiles and development of coatings able to mitigate this release - Design and synthesis of hierarchically porous systems with adsorption properties tailored for applications in water and air remediation; - Design and study of eco-sustainable polymer composites, based on traditional, bio-derived or biodegradable polymeric matrices and reinforced with natural fibers, for applications in the textile, furniture, automotive, packaging and building sectors; - Study and optimization of the interface in multiphase polymeric systems through advanced characterization techniques; - Design and optimization of new recycling processes for polymeric materials.
