An African Approach to Population Ethics

Issues, Questions, and Viewpoints

Beatrice Okyere-Manu | Peter Mwipikeni

Philosophy / Ethics & Moral Philosophy

An African Approach to Population Ethics offers an important and long-overdue shift away from Western, individualistic models of population ethics, grounding its analysis in Indigenous African communal ethics. The contributors explore a wide range of historical and contemporary issues affecting African population dynamics. They critically examine urgent questions of procreation, resource allocation, and environmental sustainability, from the ethics of climate change to the reinterpretation of traditional fertility proverbs. By prioritizing African voices and experiences, the book establishes a unique and much-needed framework for addressing population challenges with respect for African needs and priorities. It is an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and all readers focused on Africa's future.

Beatrice Okyere-Manu is an Associate Professor in the School of Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is the Programme Director for Applied Ethics. Her research interests include development ethics, which encompass the following areas: ethical issues affecting African women, Indigenous knowledge in African culture, African environmental ethics, population and migration ethics, and the ethics of technology.

Peter Mwipikeni is a Lecturer in Ethics and Philosophy at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He teaches African philosophy, African ethics, and applied ethics. He holds a Ph.D. in Moral and Political Philosophy from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
