It highlights two key educational approaches for educating the next generation of architects and engineers in space habitation design in the twenty-first century: (1) integrating the discipline of space architecture into space system engineering curricula; and (2) developing space architecture as a distinct and comprehensive field of study. Professionals educated in this way will contribute to a paradigm shift—from predominantly engineering-driven transportation systems and design for short-duration “sortie” missions towards enabling a sustained human presence beyond Earth.

This 2nd edition has been updated to reflect the latest developments and emerging trends in the field of space architecture. New content includes advances in additive manufacturing, in-space construction, artificial gravity integration, and other emerging technologies, providing insight into the current space landscape. It also features newly commissioned guest chapters contributed by leading experts from industry and academia.

The book is intended for individuals and organizations involved in planning space transportation and habitat systems, while also offering detailed insights into design methodologies and workflows for architects and engineers.

Dr. Ing. Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger is a practicing architect and accredited researcher in the field of Habitability Design in Extreme Environments and Space Architecture. She is affiliated with the Research Unit Building Construction and Design 2 at TU Wien, where she teaches courses in space architecture and construction, and emerging fields in architecture. She also instructs and leads space architecture design studios at universities across Europe, the US, and Asia. She is the Academic Director of the Executive MBA in Space Architecture at TU Wien, and leads the Space Course at the Science Academy in Lower Austria. Dr. Häuplik-Meusburger is Academician at the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), Chair of the IAA History committee and former chair of the Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC) of AIAA and the Space Habitats Committee of the IAF.
