These narratives, mirroring those of civilisation states, shaped the country's uneasy relationship with Europe, and its final decision to withdraw from the EU. By revealing the deep historical and symbolic layers beneath the Brexit process, the book discloses how civilisational thinking is used to strengthen a nation's global voice, but drives it towards isolation.
