This textbook presents a multi-faceted treatment of the essential properties of materials from basic fundamentals to engineering applications for all undergraduates at the second-year level in sciences and engineering with no prior exposure to modern physics. Clear explanations with examples are supported throughout the whole book with over 300 professionally prepared color diagrams, and a selection of scientific photographs. Each chapter has numerous solved problems and worked examples, many unique with practical significance, and engineering-related case studies. Carefully prepared definitions of important and useful terms at the end of each chapter are one of the most appealing features of the book for both students and practicing scientists and engineers. End-of-chapter problems with solutions provide students with a unique self-learning experience outside the classroom and add to an enhanced learning experience. Topics that require further physics and mathematics are collected under Additional Topics to maintain readability and to allow the book to be used in short courses.
Safa Kasap is Distinguished Professor of Electronic and Optoelectronic Materials and Devices in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He obtained his B.Sc. (1976), M.Sc. (1978) and Ph.D. (1983) degrees from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, UK, specializing in electronic and optoelectronic materials. In 1996 he was awarded the D.Sc. (Engineering) from London University for his research contributions to materials science in electrical engineering. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Royal Society of Canada. He is the author of Optoelectronics and Photonics: Principles and Practices (2nd Edition) and Principles of Electronic Materials and Devices (4th Edition). Both textbooks are widely used by many major universities and professionals. He is the Editor in Chief for the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Electronics.
