The development of visual thinking can be evidenced through the cultural practices of creating artifacts in Latin American communities, as well as with the development of a conceptual foundation of Ethnovisualization as a supportive cognitive process and a means to the discovery of ethnomathematical content. The authors of this book have come together to characterize mathematical practices that generate cultural artifacts within a Latin American context.

In the context of ethnomathematics, visual thinking is related to how cultures think about images, as well how images are used to express mathematical procedures and techniques. Ethnomathematics refers to the mathematical practices developed by members of distinct cultural groups of different cultural groups. This book is based on ethnomathematics and visual thinking as mathematical techniques developed locally in urban or rural communities, groups of workers, classes of professionals, indigenous societies, and members of minority/marginalized cultural groups that are identified by common objectives and traditions. This volume will be of particular interest to mathematics researchers and educators.

Milton Rosa

Dr. Rosa earned a Master’s degree in 2001 and a Doctorate in 2010, both in Education from California State University, Sacramento. He also earned a post-doctorate degree in Education from Universidade de São Paulo, and his studies focuses on ethnomodelling research, which is the connection between ethnomathematics and mathematical modelling. He has published papers and articles in national and international journals, chapter books, and books in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. He joined conferences at international and national levels with contributions of plenaries and round tables. He also has supervised numerous master's theses and doctoral dissertations. In 2010, Dr. Rosa was awarded the Dr. Carlos J. Vallejo Memorial Award in Multicultural and Multiethnic Education (MME), in the Special Interest Group (SIG) in the American Education Research Association (AERA) for his contributions in the area of cultural diversity in Mathematics Education.
