While numerous texts exist on disaster medicine and pediatric care separately, there is a lack of integrated guidance tailored to the unique needs of pediatric populations during crises. This text addresses this deficiency by offering evidence-based strategies, practical recommendations, and interdisciplinary insights to enhance the preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for children affected by disasters.

The scope of the book is broad, encompassing various aspects of pediatric disaster medicine from pre-incident planning to post-incident recovery. It explores the physiological, psychological, and developmental differences between children and adults, highlighting the specific vulnerabilities of pediatric populations in disaster scenarios. Additionally, the book delves into the intricacies of pediatric triage, clinical management, and psychological first aid, providing healthcare professionals and emergency responders with the knowledge and tools needed to optimize outcomes for pediatric patients.

The book is organized into four main sections. The first section focuses on disaster preparedness and includes institutional and community preparedness and interdisciplinary collaboration. The next section deals with response and discusses mass casualty pediatric triage, psychological first aid for children and families and special pediatric populations, among others. The third section centers on recovery with chapters on long-term care and rehabilitation, family reunification and resilience building and community reintegration. The last section details mitigation. Topics discussed include risk assessment and preparedness planning, infrastructure and policy interventions, climate change and pediatric disasters and infectious disease surveillance.

Through case studies, best practices, and discussions on innovations and future directions, Pediatric Disaster Medicine fosters a deeper understanding of pediatric disaster medicine and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to build resilience and mitigate the impact of disasters on children and their families. All chapters are written by experts in pediatric emergency medicine and disaster medicine fields and include the most up to date scientific and clinical information.
