Unlike traditional neuroanatomy atlases, this book is structured around the origin, meaning, and evolution of neuroanatomical terminology. Each entry combines etymology and historical context with precise anatomical description, supported by rich illustrations and references. This dual perspective not only enhances scientific understanding but also strengthens the cultural and linguistic background of the terms.

The structure of the atlas follows a consistent didactic model. Each term is introduced through its linguistic and cultural background, illustrated with references to Greco-Roman antiquity, then contextualized in its anatomical significance, and finally explored in relation to early scientific beliefs and discoveries. This systematic approach not only supports comprehension but also makes the book an engaging resource that fills a gap between medical science and the humanities.

The work is intended for a broad audience: medical students, postgraduate trainees in neurology and neurosurgery, researchers in neuroanatomy, as well as clinicians and educators who require a deeper appreciation of terminology in their daily practice. By clarifying the origins and historical transformations of key anatomical terms, the book offers readers a more coherent framework for learning, teaching, and applying neuroanatomical knowledge.

Dr. Andrei I. Cucu is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Biological Sciences at the Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava, and is a Senior Neurosurgeon who carried out his clinical activity until 2025 at the N. Oblu Emergency Hospital in Iași, Romania. He received his MD and PhD in Neurosurgery summa cum laude from Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine in Iasi, where he also completed his residency in neurosurgery. His doctoral thesis focused on the microsurgical resection of atypical intracranial meningiomas. He is board-certified in neurosurgery (2016) and was awarded the senior physician certificate in 2022. Dr. Cucu has complemented his academic and clinical training with advanced courses, including the 5th Annual Update Course in Neuro-Oncology at Harvard Medical School, the 14th Homburger Neuroendoscopy Week at Saarland University, and the 360-Degree Skull Base Course at the University of Strasbourg. His research focuses on neuroanatomy, interdisciplinary neurosurgery, iconodiagnosis, and innovative methods in medical education. He has published extensively, with more than 200 scientific articles in indexed journals, as well as nine books and book chapters. He is actively involved in the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, the International Society for the History of Medicine, and the International Society of Iconodiagnosis, as well as other professional organizations. Known for his meticulous surgical technique, strong communication skills, and dedication to medical education, Dr. Cucu serves as Course Director for Anatomy, Neurosurgery, and Teaching Methods in Medical Education at the Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava. Through his combined clinical practice, teaching and research, he aims to advance neurosurgical knowledge and practice while training the next generation of medical professionals.

Publication Date:

04 September 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032300607

Format:

Hardback
