Mobilities constitute a central analytical lens for understanding how urban space is produced, organized, and governed. Mobility infrastructures and unequal capacities to move—or to remain immobilized—play a crucial role in shaping the distribution of opportunities, resources, and vulnerabilities across cities. By analyzing the urban trajectories of Brescia and Newark from the early twentieth to the twenty-first century, the book explores how capitalist development, class struggle, racial formations, socioeconomic and racial segregation, and environmental injustice are materially infrastructured through mobility systems. Moving beyond approaches limited to the material-geographic aspects of transit infrastructures, it foregrounds the spatial and political conflicts that underpin urbanization processes. Finally, by placing two “secondary” cities in Western Europe and the United States into dialogue, the analysis adopts a decolonial perspective to interrogate hierarchies and injustices within the Global North.

Marco Alioni is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Urban and Environmental Sociology in the Department of Civil, Architectural, Environmental Engineering and Mathematics (DICATAM) at the University of Brescia. He obtained a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Studies from the Polytechnic University of Turin (Turin, Italy).

His research lies at the intersection of mobilities and infrastructure studies, political ecology, deindustrialization, segregation, gentrification, urban regeneration, ideology and hegemony studies, and socio-spatial justice. In particular, his work focuses, on one hand, on the hegemonic dimension of urban government, that is, the ways in which social power relations imprint geo-historically determined trajectories on the spatial and territorial configuration of social formations. On the other hand, his research investigates the everyday practices, representations, and perceptions of urbanites, particularly those living in stigmatized neighborhoods undergoing processes of gentrification.

Marco has published several articles in national and international journals, including Journal of Urban Affairs, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Ageing & Society, and Mobilities.

In recent years, Marco has participated in several research groups between Italy and the United States.
