Youth Sports Injury Prevention and Recovery

Joe Hart | Robin Queen

Sports & Recreation / General

This book presents research-based information on how to prevent sports injuries through proper training techniques and then what to expect following an injury, as well as how to safely return to physical activity while decreasing risk for a second injury. Readers will come away knowing the best practices in the field of sports biomechanics and injury prevention.

This is an ideal resource for coaches, sports parents, and physical therapists working with young athletes.

Robin Queen is the L. Preston Wade Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech where she serves as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and has an affiliated appointment as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Queen has been at Virginia Tech since 2015 as the director of the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Laboratory after having served for 11 years as the director of the Michael W. Krzyzewski Human Performance Laboratory at Duke University. Dr. Queen’s interests are in whole body mechanics with a focus on injury prevention and rehabilitation. Dr. Queen has published more than 160 peer reviewed manuscripts and is a Fellow in four professional societies (American College of Sports Medicine, American Society of Biomechanics, International Combined Orthopaedic Research Society, and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering). Dr. Queen was awarded the Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award for her work in ankle arthritis, the Adele L. Boskey, PhD Award and the Pytel Award in recognition of her outstanding and sustained commitment to mentorship and demonstrated track-record of impactful research. Dr. Queen is a leader in sports medicine and orthopaedics and has worked for more than 20 years to advance the scientific understanding of injury, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Joe Hart is the Norfleet-Raney Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedics and Vice Chair for Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.   Dr. Hart is a clinical research scientist with devoted interest in studying outcomes following musculoskeletal injury and orthopaedic surgery.  His research programs leverage precision measurement instrumentation, techniques and technologies used for making important healthcare decisions about recovery.  Dr. Hart’s research is primarily focused on the early recovery phases following ACL reconstruction including rehabilitation techniques for muscle strengthening, optimizing movement coordination and functional recovery through and beyond the point of release to unrestricted physical activity.  Dr. Hart has developed point-of-care research programs that merge with and inform clinical practice with the ultimate goal of early identification and treatment of musculoskeletal impairments aimed at reducing risk of re-injury and promoting well-being through safe engagement in physical activity.
