Subversive Gaming

Aparajita Bhandari | Sara Bimo

Social Science / Media Studies

This book offers a groundbreaking exploration of the intersection between gaming and subversion, providing a nuanced understanding of how games challenge and redefine power dynamics. It examines the ways games, as computational systems, create narratives and mechanics that both constrain and liberate. The book investigates how subversion in gaming leads to questions of power, meaning, and resistance in both digital and non-digital realms.

Aparajita Bhandari is an assistant professor of Critical Digital Studies in the Department of English at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Her work sits at the nexus of critical internet studies, feminist media studies and cultural theory with a focus on understanding instantiations of everyday or mundane online experiences as potential sites of resistance against hegemonic power. Her interdisciplinary research has been published in journals such as New Media & Society, Social Media +Society, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Big Data and Society amongst others.

Sara Bimo is a PhD Candidate in the joint program for Communication & Culture at York University and Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada. Her research examines the ways humans perceive, sense, and imagine the technological infrastructures underlying digital environments and the intersection between processes of non-rational world-making and processes of identity formation and political resistance.
