International Perspectives on Autism Service Delivery

Challenges and Solutions

William Farr | Ian Male

Medical / Psychiatry / General

The prevalence of autism has increased significantly in recent years, leading to increased demand for diagnostic and support/intervention services. Local context impacts on specific issues, as LMIC countries experience a lack of skilled diagnosticians, whereas HIC services can be overwhelmed by referral numbers. Innovative approaches that have been introduced have potential to improve service delivery regardless of setting. This book both better understands the current challenges faced, and explores solutions that have been adopted across the world for those redesigning services at either local or national level to meet the growing demand.

Dr William Farr has many years as a senior leader in schools specialising in children with autism, before becoming involved in clinical research via his local child development NHS service. His work has focused on the diagnostic pathways for autistic children, the prevalence of autism, and the use of digital technology in clinical settings.

Dr Ian Male works as a neurodevelopmental paediatrician in Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust and is leading service development and national research exploring how we can improve autism service delivery for children. He delivers services for children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, ADHD or cerebral palsy, and works closely across agencies including paediatric and mental health, education and social care.
