Bringing together contributions from scholars and practitioners, the book explores how cities construct and reinterpret their identities through architecture, heritage, public space, artistic practices, and civic engagement. The book collectively investigates the ways in which historical monuments, sacred landscapes, civic institutions, and residential environments shape collective memory and contribute to the formation of social and cultural identities within urban settings. The volume also highlights the role of art, media, and curatorial practices in interpreting and communicating the meaning of the urban environment. Through critical discussions on architectural representation, participatory art, cultural exhibitions, and digital platforms, the contributors demonstrate how visual culture and emerging technologies influence the perception, documentation, and preservation of urban heritage. These perspectives reveal how artistic expression and media practices can serve as powerful tools for engaging communities, reinterpreting historical narratives, and fostering dialogue about the evolving identity of cities. In addition, the book addresses the importance of spatial planning and infrastructure in supporting social integration and strengthening urban resilience. Several chapters explore how connectivity, public spaces, and civic infrastructure contribute to inclusive urban environments and support social interaction, particularly within complex contexts such as rapidly expanding global cities and communities facing displacement or transformation. These analyses emphasize the role of thoughtful spatial strategies in shaping accessible and socially responsive urban landscapes. The volume further presents innovative approaches to heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, and sustainable urban regeneration. Through a range of international case studies, the contributors discuss how historical buildings, industrial sites, and cultural landscapes can be revitalized through technological innovation, environmental sensitivity, and community participation. By integrating heritage preservation with contemporary design and sustainability principles, the chapters illustrate pathways for maintaining cultural continuity while responding to present-day urban challenges. Together, the contributions offer a comprehensive perspective on how cities navigate the intersections of identity, culture, and sustainability in an increasingly complex urban world.

Tatjana Pivac, full professor

University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management, Novi Sad, Serbia. His academic career has been devoted to integrating the traditional principles of architectural drawing with advanced digital methodologies for the documentation, analysis, and conservation of the built heritage. His research focuses on three-dimensional surveying and digital documentation for the preservation and management of cultural, architectural, and urban heritage. In particular, his work investigates the development and implementation of innovative technologies --including 3D laser scanning, image-based modelling and photogrammetry, UAV data acquisition, 3D data processing, and reverse engineering --to enhance accuracy, accessibility, and interpretative potential in heritage studies. His scientific activity also extends to the digital representation of historical and contemporary architecture, the development of virtual and augmented reality applications for cultural heritage, and the creation of integrated HBIM (Historic Building Information Modelling) environments supporting conservation design and preventive maintenance. His research aims to bridge the gap between technological innovation and architectural knowledge, promoting an interdisciplinary approach that combines engineering, history, and digital culture in the service of heritage documentation and enhancement.

Publication Date:

22 October 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032343222

Format:

Hardback
