With potent and unforeseeable implications across real-world, scientific, and industrial domains, Quantum AI holds promise in optimization problems and machine learning analysis. As with any disruptive force, ethical themes and challenges emerge, demanding consideration lest we jeopardize both ourselves and our societies, missing out on colossal opportunities.

To leverage the benefits of this transformative technology, its trustworthy and ethical development and deployment are paramount. This book is your guide to comprehending Quantum AI technology and navigating the ethical dilemmas it introduces. In this book, the authors, drawing on their expertise in quantum physics, applied ethics, and artificial intelligence, unveil a novel vocabulary for Quantum AI. This vocabulary aims to render the characteristics, social impact, and ethical challenges and themes intelligible to the wider audience, offering the first comprehensive introduction to the ethical foundations, societal implications, and governance challenges of Quantum AI.

Beyond introducing AI Ethics and Quantum AI, this book delves into existing and emerging ethical challenges, examining how the ethical questions raised by contemporary AI may be transformed, amplified, or reconfigured in the QAI era. The volume introduces and develops Quantum AI Ethics as a new interdisciplinary field of inquiry. It explores both an ethics of QAI – investigating the ethical, social, and political implications of quantum-classical hybrid learning systems – and an ethics for QAI, aimed at guiding their responsible design, development, and deployment. Topics include transparency and explainability, algorithmic fairness, sustainability, human autonomy in the face of new cybersecurity threats, and the emerging QAI divide exacerbating global inequalities. Groundbreaking explorations include a novel form of AI opacity and new biases in quantum-enhanced systems, accompanied by the first ethical compass designed to systematically identify and address these challenges.

Despite being a fledgling technology, Quantum AI evolves swiftly, paralleled by substantial global investments. Hence, timely identification, analysis, and awareness of ethical challenges become imperative, laying the groundwork for ethical principles, standards, and risk management strategies. This book stands out, shedding light on unexplored facets and paving the way for an ethical future in the Quantum AI era.

Filippo Caruso possesses internationally recognized expertise in quantum information science and numerical optimization, in close collaboration with experimentalists towards applications in quantum communication and computation technologies, as well as in biology and medicine. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the highly prestigious 2015 Physics Award by the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, presented by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. In 2016, he was selected and nominated by the European Commission (EC) to participate in the 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Physics, involving around 200 highly talented young scientists from all over the world and more than 30 Nobel Laureates.

He has led a research group on quantum technologies since 2012, later focusing on the emerging field of Quantum AI. Since 2021, he has also spearheaded the Italian participation in the first initiative towards an EU quantum infrastructure via the EuroHPC-JU project "HPCQS". With long-lasting expertise in both national (e.g., FIRB) and international (e.g., individual EU MSCA) projects, he recently served as the Principal Investigator of the H2020 EU-FETOPEN project "PATHOS" on quantum biosensing.

He has also coordinated the National Project "Trustworthy hybrid quantum-classical Artificial Intelligence for Medical Image Analysis (ThAI-MIA)”, also involving Tiribelli. He regularly publishes in high-impact factor leading international journals, such as Nature Communications, Nature Materials, Physics Review Letters, and Review Modern Physics, with more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He is Full Professor in Physics at the Univ. of Florence where since 2022 he also teaches the new course on Quantum Machine Learning, marking the first master course on this topic at the national level. In 2023 he co-founded an innovative startup to develop full-stack (hardware and software) quantum processors to solve real complex problems for optimization and quantum AI applications. Additionally, he has consolidated experience in outreach and press releases related to Quantum Science, often participating in public meetings in the presence of high-ranking political officers, including prime ministers, ministers, and parliament presidents.

Simona Tiribelli holds internationally recognized expertise in AI ethics and governance, with a focus on trustworthy AI, algorithmic fairness, and global justice.
