How to Design Hotels

Alessio Venturi

Architecture / Interior Design / General

How to Design Hotels is a comprehensive and visually engaging guide to the principles, processes, and practical realities of hospitality design. Written by architect and academic Alessio Venturi, the book draws upon two decades of international professional experience and academic teaching to provide an accessible resource for students, emerging designers, architects, and hospitality professionals.
The book explores a broad spectrum of hotel typologies—from luxury resorts and lifestyle hotels to budget accommodation, urban developments, remote retreats, and micro-hotels—demonstrating how guest expectations, operational requirements, market positioning, and site context influence design decisions. Through these examples, readers gain a clear understanding of the diverse challenges and opportunities that shape contemporary hotel architecture.

Structured around the key elements of successful hotel planning, the book examines Front of House and Back of House relationships, guest and service circulation, room design, accessibility, operational efficiency, and the anatomy of a typical hotel floor. Particular attention is given to the balance between guest experience and commercial performance, illustrating how thoughtful design can enhance both operational effectiveness and long-term value.

Recognising the growing importance of sustainability and adaptive reuse, the book also explores the transformation of existing buildings into hotels, demonstrating how architects can respond creatively to environmental, economic, and heritage considerations while delivering memorable hospitality experiences.

Richly illustrated with international case studies, photographs, diagrams, architectural drawings, and practical design guidance, How to Design Hotels translates complex concepts into clear and accessible lessons. From boutique retreats and independent hotels to large-scale hospitality developments, the book provides readers with a structured framework for understanding how hotels work, how they are designed, and how they can be made exceptional.

Bridging the gap between theory and professional practice, How to Design Hotels serves as both a learning tool and a professional reference, offering valuable insights for anyone seeking to design hospitality environments with clarity, creativity, efficiency, and purpose in an increasingly competitive global market.
