Contributors offer state-of-the-art insights into the theoretical and experimental foundations of quantum computing and simulation with ultracold neutral atoms, complemented by concise, targeted lectures on specialized topics and related scientific fields.

In recent years, ultracold atoms in optical lattices and tweezers have emerged as leading platforms for quantum simulation and computing. Topics include quantum computation and simulation, ultracold quantum gases, neutral atoms in optical lattices, Rydberg atoms in optical tweezer arrays, trapped ions, strongly correlated systems, non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, quantum information and control, quantum metrology and sensing, and superconducting and photonic platforms. The book is aimed at Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty in the field.

Immanuel Bloch is the scientific director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching and holds a chair for experimental physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. His scientific work is among the most frequently cited in the field of quantum physics and has helped to open a new interdisciplinary research field at the interface of atomic physics, quantum optics, quantum information science, and solid-state physics. For his research, he has received numerous international awards, including the Körber European Science Prize, the Harvey Prize, the Zeiss Research Award, and the Stern Gerlach Medal of the German Physical Society, and he was named Clarivate Citation Laureate in 2022 for work on quantum simulations.
Antoine Browaeys is a senior staff scientist at CNRS. He studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Cachan (France) and did his Ph.D. under Alain Aspect at the Institut d’Optique (2000). He spent two years at NIST in the Laser Cooling group led by W.D. Phillips. He was hired as a scientist at CNRS in 2003. He is working on experiments manipulating individual laser-cooled atoms and small, dense atomic clouds to explore many-body physics with synthetic quantum systems. Part of his research led to the creation of the Pasqal company, of which he is a co-founder and scientific adviser. He was awarded the Aimé Cotton Prize of the French Physical Society in 2007 and the Silver medal of CNRS in 2021. He was elected a member of the French Academy of Science in December 2023.
Leonardo Fallani is a professor of physics at the University of Florence (Italy) and research associate of the European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy (LENS) and the National Institute of Optics (CNR). His research experience is in the field of experimental atomic physics, high-precision spectroscopy, ultracold quantum gases, and quantum simulation with atoms in optical lattices. He is leading an experimental research group investigating ultracold quantum gases and optical tweezer arrays of two-electron atoms for many-body quantum physics.
Vladislav Gavryusev is an assistant professor in experimental Ultracold Atom Physics at the University of Florence. He started studying ultracold atom physics during his master at the University of Florence and then learned about Rydberg physics during his Ph.D. at Heidelberg University under the supervision of Matthias Weidemüller. Then, he developed an advanced dual-view light sheet microscope to map the human brain structure as an MSCA-IF fellow in biophysics at LENS. Finally, he came back to ultracold Rydberg atom physics, building a new experiment for quantum simulation with Rydberg Strontium atoms in programmable Optical Tweezers, together with a great team and colleagues.

Publication Date:

03 October 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032345561

Format:

Hardback

Page Count:

430
