This concise textbook provides a consistent presentation of basic concepts and approaches within Biomedical Engineering that are needed in biofluid and biosolid mechanics, biomass and bioheat transfer, and biothermodynamics, thus rendering this book an ideal foundation for diverse advanced courses while encouraging critical thinking. All derivations and applications are illustrated in one-spatial dimension, thus avoiding complexities associated with vector and tensor analysis while emphasizing the basics. Each chapter includes observations and examples and is followed by exercises to aid student comprehension. This textbook is intended for undergraduate students in biomedical engineering as well as a unifying refresher for graduate students or a broad introduction for life science and mathematics students.
Jay D. Humphrey is John C. Malone Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Yale University. He received the Ph.D. degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics from The Georgia Institute of Technology and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Cardiovascular Research at The Johns Hopkins University. He has authored or co-authored three prior books – Cardiovascular Solid Mechanics: Cells, Tissues, and Organs; An Introduction to Biomechanics: Solids and Fluids, Analysis and Design (3rd Ed); and Style and Ethics of Communication in Science and Engineering (2nd Ed) – as well as chapters for over 30 other books or encyclopedias plus over 400 archival technical papers. He served for a decade as founding co-Editor-In-Chief for the international journal Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers, and the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering.
