The first, A Summary of Optics, covers the evolution of optical science from Greek studies of vision to Latin Europe, Kepler's theories, and the groundbreaking work of Newton and Huygens. It traces the development of 17th-century light theories, explores the discovery of diffraction, and highlights the first astronomical measurement of light speed. Newton's influence dominates the 18th century, with significant advancements in chromatic aberration and wave theory. Chapter 5 delves into the wave-based explanations of diffraction and interference, featuring Young, Biot, Arago, and Fresnel’s contributions. Chapter 6 focuses on Fresnel’s work, which provided a solid wave theory framework. The final section in this part reviews key measurements of light speed and the ether-drift experiment in pre-relativistic physics.

The second part, A Brief History of Acoustics, traces the development of sound theory from ancient Greece to the early 20th century. Chapter 8 covers the emergence of acoustics as a scientific field, discussing the vibrating string problem, the Superposition Principle, and Fourier series. It also examines Helmholtz's physiological acoustics and concludes with the impact of electromechanical advances on the field.

This work offers a detailed yet concise history of optics and acoustics, emphasizing key discoveries, theories, and controversies that shaped these essential scientific fields.

Luiz Roberto Evangelista is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics at Universidade Estadual de Maringá (Paraná, Brazil) (Lre@dfi.uem.br). He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics (field theory and particle physics) from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 1988. His research interests include complex fluids, complex systems, and the history of physics, with a focus on the mathematical physics of liquid crystals, normal and anomalous diffusion, adsorption-desorption phenomena, and modern boundary value problems, particularly in applications to liquid-crystalline systems and impedance spectroscopy. He is the author of several books on the history of physics, on the elasticity of liquid crystals, and fractional calculus applied to anomalous diffusion phenomena, including the more recent Fractional Diffusion Equations and Anomalous Diffusion (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and An Introduction to Anomalous Diffusion and Relaxation (Springer-Nature, 2023).

Publication Date:

31 December 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032356192

Format:

Hardback
