Dr. Khemka has published extensively in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities, specializing in research on the theoretical and applied aspects of decision making in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders. She co-edited Decision Making by Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Integrating Research into Practice, published in 2021, as part of Springer’s Positive Psychology and Disability Series. In collaboration with Linda Hickson, Ph.D., she conducted a series of projects funded by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, the Williams Syndrome Association, and the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council that resulted in a long-term research program examining effective ways to reduce the social vulnerability of adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism by strengthening their capacity to make independent and effective self-protective decisions. She is the lead author of two decision making research-based prevention programs (ESCAPE-NOW and PEER-DM) aimed at reducing social vulnerability and maltreatment in adolescents and adults. These programs, which exemplify high-quality, evidence-based practices for abuse prevention, are widely used internationally.
