The future is unwritten, but the past and present of this key yet largely uncharted group in Ireland's identity is finally placed under the microscope. This book is a rare achievement. Both intellectually rigorous and open to possibilities, it caps a distinct trilogy on contested identities across this island that will be consulted for years to come.”

--Connal Parr, Associate Professor in History, Northumbria University, UK

The Contested Identities of Ulster Dissenters concludes a trilogy tracing the entanglement of religion, politics and belonging across three centuries of Northern Irish history. Where the earlier volumes examined the region’s dominant communal identities, this final study recovers a dissenting tradition that has both connected and challenged them—from Presbyterian radicalism, the United Irishmen and campaigns for civic reform to labour politics, cultural expression and the search for a viable centre ground after the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

Combining historical scholarship with contemporary political and cultural analysis, the book speaks not only to academics and students but also to policy-makers, journalists, educators, civic organisations and general readers seeking a deeper understanding of Northern Ireland’s contested past and uncertain future. Its exploration of conscience, pluralism, class, identity and political belonging also engages wider debates about polarisation, post-conflict societies and the possibilities of politics beyond entrenched communal divisions. The volume therefore serves both as a scholarly contribution and an accessible resource for readers concerned with identity, dissent and democratic renewal in Ireland.

Thomas Paul Burgess is a Belfast-born academic, author, novelist, songwriter and musician who lives in Cork, Ireland.
