The first chapter, “Dialetheism and Dimathematism”, written by Graham Priest, is a critical reply to the paper “One Heresy and One Orthodoxy: On Dialetheism, Dimathematism, and the Non-normativity of Logic”, Erkenntnis, 2022, in which Heinrich Wansing discusses dialetheism and introduces a view of contradictions that he calls “dimathematism”. The second chapter, “Dimathematism and Dialetheism”, written by Wansing, is a reply to Priest’s chapter and spells out in greater detail what is meant by dimathematism. The third chapter, written by Nils Kürbis, is a critical commentary on the first two chapters. This Brief appeals to researchers and students working in philosophical logic.

Graham Priest has held chairs of philosophy in Australia, the UK, and the United States, as well as many visiting positions at universities in countries in Europe and Asia. He is currently Distinguished Professor at Tohoku University (Japan), Visiting Chair Professor at the Shandong University (China), and Boyce Gibson Professor Emeritus at Melbourne University (Australia). He is known for his work on non-classical logic, particularly in connection with dialetheism, on metaphysics, on the history of philosophy, and on Buddhist philosophy. He has published over 400 papers in nearly every major logic and philosophy journal. Heinrich Wansing has been working mainly on philosophical logic, including the semantics and proof theory of modal, constructive, paraconsistent, many-valued, and other non-classical logics. Moreover, he is the editor-in-chief of the book series Trends in Logic (Springer) and a managing editor of the journal Studia Logica.

Nils Kürbis is university professor in the Department of Logic and Methodology of the University of Łódź. Before that, he was akademischer Oberrat and Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, hosted by Heinrich Wansing, in the Department of Philosophy I of Ruhr University Bochum, where he continues being Privatdozent. Even before he held appointments at universities in the UK, mostly in London, where he obtained his PhD at King’s College and remains an honorary research associate at UCL. He has published widely in formal and philosophical logic, mostly in relation to philosophical questions relating to proof theory and proof-theoretic semantics. His work includes negation, denial and falsity, modality and definite descriptions, much of the latter as a member of the team of Andrzej Indrzejcak’s ERC Advanced Grant ‘ExtenDD - Coming to Terms’ (project number: 101054714). He also has historical interests, in particular in Plato’s dialogues and in the works of Frege, Russell, the early Moore and the history of analytic philosophy.

Publication Date:

23 November 2026

Publisher:

European Research Council

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032399892

Format:

Paperback softback

Page Count:

68
