Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications

Cemal Basaran

Science / Mechanics / General

This third edition has been updated and augmented throughout with new example problems and introduces multiple new sections, on modeling of hydrogen embrittlement in metals, derivation of the fundamental thermodynamic equation for low-carbon bcc steel operating in a hydrogen-rich environment under very high-cycle fatigue conditions, application of the model to an industry-standard problem, derivation of finite element equilibrium equations for dynamic analysis, starting from the Lagrangian formulation based on unified mechanics space-time-thermodynamic state index coordinate system, and based on the universal laws of unified mechanics theory; and derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations starting from the second law of the unified mechanics theory. The book retains the mathematical formulation and proof of Unified Mechanics Theory (UMT), an ab initio unification of Newton's laws of motion and the second law of thermodynamics the foundational formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for metal corrosion, corrosion-fatigue interaction, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and chemical loading applications. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses and first-year graduate-level courses, this work is the culmination of over 30 years of scientific activity, enriched by contributions from 26 Ph.D. students and dozens of scientists worldwide.

Cemal Basaran is a Professor of Engineering Mechanics in the Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, SUNY, Buffalo, New York USA.
