This open access book combines real-world pilot insights with cutting-edge tools for nature-based coastal solutions. Coastal systems are experiencing an increasing risk due to climatic and human pressures. Recent advances from European Union Green deal projects such as REST-COAST have shown the value of coastal restoration and the delivery of ecosystem services to reduce risk levels from short to long-term. The combination of hands-on restoration, techniques for restoration upscaling, financial and business plans to support that upscaling and the associated coastal adaptation using adaptation pathways form a knowledge nexus that can support practitioners, decision makers, policy makers and researchers from all the fields that converge in a sustainable coastal protection.

Prof. Agustín Sanchez-Arcilla, Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, is Full Professor at Catalonia University of Technology (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya UPC-Barcelonatech) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DECA). He develops his research activity in the field of maritime (coastal and harbor) engineering, coastal oceanography and their mutual interactions. He has published over 20 books and over 200 research papers in national and international journals, and taken part in more than 35 European research projects tackling coastal risks and natural solutions for a resilient adaptation.

Dr. Sánchez-Artús is working in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (UPC). He develops his research activity in the field of coastal numerical modelling and operational systems. He has published four  articles in peer review journals, and more than 15 communications in international and national conferences, and taken part in more than 7 European and National research projects.

Prof. Vicente Gracia is Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (UPC) and completed his Ph.D. in Marine Science (UPC, 2005). His  research focusses on coastal engineering, morphodynamics and hydrodynamics. He has been the coordinator of the EU project iCoast, a coastal early warning system against extreme wave events. At present, he is the coordinator of ECOPLANTS, a Spanish project about nature-based solutions for coastal management. He has published over 22 articles in peer review journals, more than 90 communications in international and national conferences, 4 books and 7 book chapters.

Prof. Robert Nicholls analyzes long-term coastal problems and solutions from a systems perspective. Much of his work has focused on sea-level rise and climate change, including  the future of populated deltas and coastal cities. He is a longstanding contributor to Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) assessment process (1992 to 2019). He was formerly Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research based at University of East Anglia and Professor of Coastal Engineering at University of Southampton and still works with both institutions. He has published more than 300 articles in peer review journals, more than 90 book chapters and lead 16 books and journal collections.
