This open access volume casts a critical and timely light on contemporary intentional and unintentional obfuscations that undermine the people-centered approach essential to a successful transition towards maritime decarbonization. Grounded in justice-oriented interdisciplinary research, it examines the interwoven dimensions of this transition through distributive and procedural fairness, accountability for environmental harm, recognition of differentiated responsibilities, and restorative measures for those disproportionately affected.

At the outset, the volume establishes the nexus between climate justice and the active participation of diverse stakeholders in international shipping, particularly freight transport, and port operations, albeit with reference to the human element, inter alia, seafarers, port workers, and stakeholders in developing and climate-vulnerable regions.

The many chapters of this volume resonate with other secondary sources on maritime decarbonization; technological innovation is cardinal and decisive. What sets this volume apart is its support for just transition, which requires sustained investment in the reskilling, upskilling, and training of seafarers and port workers, enabling them to work safely and effectively with alternative fuels, digital systems, and emerging green technologies. Equally important, by analyzing the scope and limitations of existing regulatory frameworks, the volume’s normative conclusions accentuate the indispensable role of governments and international bodies in creating a much-needed environment conducive to a people-centered transition --- one attuned to the principles of fairness that bolster support for climate justice.

Economic viability is examined through regional case studies and lessons learned from selected jurisdictions. Beyond economics, the book advances the ethical imperative of social responsibility by considering effects on local communities, gender equity, workforce well-being, and broader societal welfare.
