Bringing together fundamental science, materials engineering, advanced manufacturing, and biomedical applications, it demonstrates how the distinctive physicochemical and biological properties of animal proteins can be harnessed to design functional materials for healthcare. Particular emphasis is placed on translating these naturally derived materials into innovative, high-performance biomedical formulations.

Readers will gain insights into the design, modification, fabrication, and performance of engineered systems based on collagen, gelatin, silk fibroin, casein, bovine serum albumin, whey protein, eggshell-derived biomaterials, and related proteins. The book connects established approaches with emerging developments in drug delivery, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, wound healing, biosensing, smart materials, and 3D/4D printing and bioprinting. It also addresses sustainability, commercialization, environmental and health considerations, and the growing use of computational modelling, molecular dynamics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for biomaterial design and optimization.

The book is a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, biomedical and materials engineers, pharmaceutical scientists, clinicians, and industry professionals. It offers an interdisciplinary foundation for understanding structure–property–function relationships, evaluating emerging technologies, identifying research opportunities, and developing sustainable animal protein-based solutions for future biomedical applications.

Dr. Mahmoud H.
