Political Corruption and Governance

Public Sector Ethics in Practice

Insights from Swedish Public Administration

Staffan Andersson | Helena Ekelund

Political Science / Public Policy / General

This book explores how public sector organisations work to promote integrity and fight ethics violations. Integrity and ethical conduct are key to maintaining public confidence in these organisations. Many established and wealthy democracies face a paradoxical situation. While various performance indicators suggest that public governance works comparatively well and with relatively low corruption levels, citizens still perceive corruption and other ethics violations to be pertinent problems. In such contexts, ethics management plays an important role for upholding integrity. This book examines these issues in the context of Sweden, at both national and local levels of government. It analyses ethics management strategies in public sector organisations and the bodies that support their ethics work, offers new insights on staff and stakeholder inclusion, and presents practical solutions based on theoretically informed in-depth empirical research.

It will appeal to students and scholars of public policy, public administration and governance, as well as practitioners.
