Seamus Heaney was the most celebrated English language poet of his generation. His public persona transcended the genre: following the award of a Nobel Prize in 1995 he was afforded the status of establishment sage, to be fêted by authorities and quoted by presidents. The Estate of Seamus Heaney does well to remind us, however, that most of all this man’s legacy ‘lives on through the poems themselves’. Heaney’s posthumous reputation will therefore need to be securely grounded in a clear-eyed appreciation of the distinctive nature, quality and continuing relevance of his writing. It is with this in mind that the contributors to Sounding Heaney return to the poetry, invoking its compelling spirit as they reassess its value within the context of a changing world.

Dr Shea Atchison completed his doctoral thesis, Seamus Heaney and the Aesthetics of Enlightenment (2020), for Ulster University, and has since taught at UU and the Heaney Homeplace in Bellaghy.

Dr Tim Hancock teaches English Literature at UU and writes on modern poetry. Recent publications include an article on Larkin (Essays in Criticism, 2024), a chapter on Plath (The Bloomsbury Handbook to Sylvia Plath, 2022), and a critical study of Betjeman (John Betjemen: Making Light, Greenwich Exchange, 2021).

Dr Frank Ferguson is Research Director for English Language and Literature at UU. He has written and edited a number of publications on Ulster literature including Ulster-Scots Writing: an Anthology (2008) and Balancing Acts: Conversations with Gerald Dawe on a Life in Poetry (2023). Frank is the current Chair of the John Hewitt Society, a Governor of the Linen Hall Library and Chair of the Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.
