It showcases advanced research and computational methods addressing challenges in smart and sustainable transport systems. The book covers a broad range of topics, including aeronautics and fluid mechanics, automotive technologies, railways and logistics, ship technologies, numerical methods and tools, icing technologies, and propulsion technologies. By bringing together innovative approaches and practical solutions, this book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and practitioners working at the intersection of computational science and transportation technology.

Domenico Quagliarella received an MS degree in May 1988 and, in July 1993, a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University “Federico II” in Naples, Italy. In July 1988, he obtained a research engineer position at CIRA, where he is currently the head of the Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design Group of the Fluid Mechanics Department. His research interests include applying hybrid multi-objective optimization methods to aerodynamic and multidisciplinary design, utilizing approximate fitness evaluators for efficiency improvements in optimization, and uncertainty quantification for robust and reliability-based design.

Carlo Poloni is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Trieste and co-founded ESTECO in 1999. He previously worked at Aeritalia and Sincrotrone Trieste and joined the University of Trieste as a researcher with a focus on Multidisciplinary Design Optimization. He is founder member of AISE, the Italian Association of Systems Engineering, affiliated to INCOSE.

Gabriel Bugeda is Professor at the Civil and Environmental Engineering (DECA), in the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). He is affiliated to the International Centre of Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE). He has more than 30 years of experience in the development of different tools for the solution of shape optimisation problems in solid as well as in fluid mechanics in combination with finite element analysis.

Jacques Périaux's career began at Dassault Aviation (France), where he served as Head of the Numerical Analysis Group in the Département d’Aérodynamique Théorique, as High Scientific Adviser of the Advanced Studies Division, and later chaired the Pôle Scientifique Dassault Aviation / University Pierre et Marie Curie. From 2007 to 2010, he was selected by TEKES, the Finnish government organization, as Distinguished Professor in the Mathematical Information Technology Department at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. In 2010, he received a UNESCO Chair in Numerical Methods in Engineering at CIMNE/UPC Barcelona, Spain. Over the past two decades, Dr. Périaux has established numerous scientific and technological collaborations in Europe, the USA, Australia, and China. His research interests include Evolutionary Algorithms, Game Strategies, and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO).

Tero T. Tuovinen received his Ph.D. from the University of Jyväskylä in 2011. In 2016, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Computational Science and Its Applications at the Faculty of Information Technology. Since 2005, his research has focused on computational mechanics, particularly moving materials and industrial processes. He served as the Faculty’s Research Coordinator until 2020, when he joined JAMK University of Applied Sciences. He currently works as a Principal Researcher at the School of Technology. Throughout his career, he has gained extensive experience in collaborating with industry and leading complex research projects. Tuovinen is a member of the ECCOMAS Managing Board and the Computational Solid and Structural Mechanics Committee.

Dietrich Knoerzer holds a master degree in aerospace engineering and a Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in mechanical engineering from the RWTH Aachen University. From 1985, he worked for the Airbus partner MBB in Hamburg/ Germany (today Airbus Operations) on advanced technologies. In 1989, he joined the European Commission in the Directorate General for Research in Brussels. Within the EU Research Framework Programmes, he worked as a senior scientific officer for research in aeronautics and in transport. He was responsible for research activities in aircraft design and flight physics as well as for the co-operation with China in aeronautics research. Since his retirement from the European Commission in December 2016, he works as an independent aeronautics expert.

Publication Date:

20 December 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032412256

Format:

Hardback
