This book introduces the principles, instrumentation, and practical applications of XRF across biological, environmental, industrial, and forensic settings. From detecting toxic metals in human tissues and food products to analyzing cultural artifacts and industrial materials, readers will discover how XRF provides rapid, non-destructive, and reliable results with wide-ranging impact. Designed for students, researchers, and professionals, the book highlights why XRF is becoming a go-to technique for modern science and public health.

Uniquely integrates X-ray fluorescence (XRF) principles with real-world case studies across multiple disciplines;

Focuses on XRF as a powerful tool for identifying and measuring the elemental makeup of real-world materials;

Clear illustrations, practical flowcharts, and sample spectra explain XRF concepts in a way that is ideal for students.

Kolawole E. Adesina is a researcher in health physics whose work centers on advancing the use of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques for elemental analysis in biological and environmental systems. His research explores how different XRF instrumentations (i.e., energy-dispersive and optically filtered systems) can be used to non-invasively detect and quantify metals in biomarkers such as bone, toenails, soft tissue phantoms, and nasosorption samples. In addition to method development, Kolawole focuses on validating these XRF tools against gold-standard techniques like inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). He also applies sodium iodide scintillation and high-purity germanium detectors to monitor radionuclide uptake in environmental and biological contexts. His broader research goal is to improve toxicological risk assessment and public health monitoring by expanding access to rapid, non-destructive metal screening technologies.

Dr. Aaron Specht is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences. He received his B.S. from Purdue in Honors Physics and Ph.D. from Purdue in Medical and Health Physics. He completed postdoctoral training at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where he remains active as part of their Trace Metals Laboratory utilizing his x-ray fluorescence devices. His research focuses on the development, application, and understanding of exposure assessment for elemental and radiation exposures in environmental and occupational health studies. He has developed instrumentation capable of in-field or in-lab measures that utilize a non-destructive, non-invasive, and cost-effective elemental quantification method using x-ray fluorescence. This includes everything from measuring nail, bone, or blood to determine exposure to a human or in animal studies to measuring soil, ash, or air filters to determine ongoing exposures at particular sites. He has performed exposure assessments using x-ray fluorescence techniques in hospitals from Iraq to India or more remote in-field applications like measuring mercury-based gold mining in the Amazon rainforest and California Condors on the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Publication Date:

13 March 2027

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032412799

Format:

Hardback
